MacBook Printer Installation
Purpose: This guide will help the end user
install printers on their MacBook.
Applies to: Mac
OS 10.5.x
Before you begin:
You will need the following before you install your printer:
- Network
connectivity.
- You
will need to be connected to the Admin network via a network cable or a
wireless connection to add printers in the district
- The
name or IP address of the printer that you are adding
- This
will come from your siteÕs Tech Coach or from the IT Department
- If
you are adding a USB printer, you will not need a name or IP address, the
printer should appear on the list
- The
correct drivers for the printer
- Check
the Make and model of the printer that you are adding. Refer to the manufacturerÕs
website for the download and installation of the latest print
drivers. Remember that we are
using Mac OS 10.5.7 currently as there may be different drivers for the
different Mac OS versions.
With your network connectivity, your printer identified, and
the drivers installed you are ready to install your printer.
Installation:
Launch the Add Printer
Wizard
- Go to
the System PreferencesÉ
á
Either launch the System Preferences from the
icon in the tray

OR go to the Apple Menu and select System
Preferences
- Select
Print & Fax
- Click
on the Ô+Õ on the left side to begin the Add Printer wizard
The Add Printer Wizard
There are 2 ways to add a printer, either by name or by IP
address. Both methods are covered
below. It is assumed that you are
in the add printer wizard from the above steps.
Add a Printer by name
- Select
the printer name from the list of printers on the screen
- You
can change some information about the printer on this screen if you choose

You can change the Name and Location Fields
below the list of printers to a more descriptive name (for example the name
could be Adele Copier and the
location could be Adele Harrison). These values are to help you identify
the printer, so set them accordingly.
- Check
for the correct print driver in the Print
Using: dropdown
- If
the correct print driver is displayed skip to Step 4. (See note below) Otherwise,
continue below.
- Click
on the dropdown and select ÔSelect a driver to useÉÕ
- Choose
your printer Make and Model from the dropdown list

If you donÕt see your make and model, you may
not have installed the print drivers for your particular printer. Refer to the manufacturerÕs website for
driver downloads and installation instructions.
- Click
the Add button. The printer
should show up on your list of available printers.
Add a Printer by IP Address
- Select
the IP button from the top of the screen
- Enter
the IP Address in the Address field.
It should look like 10.205.16.20 (4 numbers with periods between
them)
- Check
below the address box for ÒValid and complete address.Ó
- Leave
the Queue blank for the default queue
- You
can change the name and location fields
- You
can change the Name and Location Fields to a more
descriptive name (for example the name could be Adele Copier and the location could be Adele Harrison). These values are to help you identify the
printer, so set them accordingly.
- Check
for the correct print driver in the Print
Using: dropdown
- If
the correct print driver is displayed skip to Step 7. (See note below) Otherwise,
continue below.
- Click
on the Print Using: dropdown
and select ÔSelect a driver to useÉÕ
- Choose
your printer Make and Model from the dropdown list

If you donÕt see your make and model, you may
not have installed the print drivers for your particular printer. Refer to the manufacturerÕs website for
driver downloads and installation instructions.
- Click
the Add button. The printer
should show up on your list of available printers.
Print a test page to
check connectivity.
Notes:
A Generic PostScript Printer Driver is generally the
incorrect driver. That is not to
say that it will not work with your printer. The generic PostScript driver is
designed to help you print documents and simple images to a PostScript
printer. If possible, you want to
obtain the latest drivers for your printer from the manufacturorÕs
website. They will include the
advanced features and graphics handling routines for your printer.
